WHY MISSIONS?
Before He ascended into Heaven, Jesus told His followers to go to the whole world and preach the Gospel, making disciples of all nations, baptizing and teaching them. Then, as now, ‘go’ meant ‘don’t stay’, ‘make disciples’ meant ‘duplicate Jesus in others’ and ‘baptize’ meant ‘birth people into a new family—God’s family’.
He also told them they would receive power from God to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria and the ends of the earth. Simply put, He told them to begin at home and move outward, and that He would be with them powerfully, every step of the way.
Ten years later God told the apostle Peter—a kosher Jew—to do the unthinkable—preach to a Roman Centurion in his own house. The Gospel finally reached the Gentiles. Four more years passed before Paul took the Message beyond the borders of Judea—and the rest is history. Even so, years later, as the apostle Paul preached to the Mediterranean world, the other apostles lingered in Jerusalem—a place where Jesus did not intend them to stay…
Missions: Jesus didn’t tell His followers to invite people to church—He told them to go. He didn’t pour out His Spirit on people to make them feel good about their church, He told them to go. And He hasn’t rescinded His command. Whether it’s our next door neighbor or a stranger on the other side of the world, people need Jesus. Near or far, we—His church—have been commissioned to take the Good News to the lost and needy, and to encourage and supply His servants laboring in far fields of the world. We are missions.
WE GO OUT to the Georgetown Divide because our neighbors need to know the goodness of Jesus through the lives and love of His people. This is our Jerusalem.
WE GO OUT to surrounding towns, cities and regions to encourage the church, preach the Gospel, teach the Bible and bless others. This is our Judea and Samaria.
WE GO OUT to the ends of the earth, because most of the world’s people have yet to hear of Jesus and the salvation we know so well. Even more, many brothers and sisters labor hard in remote corners of the world, desperate for encouragement, fellowship and resources. These are the uttermost parts of the earth.
WE GO OUT because Jesus commanded us to go. We are missions.
