A Brief History of Calvary Chapel

History 2CALVARY CHAPEL is an evangelical, non-denominational movement that began in 1965 in Huntington Beach, California, with Pastor Chuck Smith and a little flock of twenty-five people. It was during this time that the tiny church moved to Costa Mesa, where Pastor Chuck became a key minister to the youth of what became known as “the Jesus Movement” of the 1960’s. Reaching out to the young people of the counter-culture – the hippies, drug users, and those rebelling against social and religious traditions, many enthusiastically received the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Thus, just as any work of the Holy Spirit, God gave the increase and thousands gave their lives to Christ. Today, Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa is listed among the world’s twenty largest churches and one of the ten largest Evangelical churches in California, with more than thirty thousand people calling it their home fellowship. From the small beginnings of this first Calvary Chapel, many other men answered the call to go out and plant new churches, which in turn raised up other new pastors and church planters. At present, there are more than twelve-hundred Calvary Chapel churches around the United States and the world. One such fellowship is Calvary Chapel Georgetown Divide.

History 3CALVARY CHAPEL GEORGETOWN DIVIDE began in 1990 as a home Bible study in the Sierra foothills town of Cool, California. Taught by Calvary Chapel of Auburn assistant pastor Jay McCarl, the first meeting was attended by twenty-five adults and seventeen children who mostly attended the Auburn church. At the conclusion of the meeting, the people asked Pastor Jay how soon they could begin Sunday morning services. If this distinctively rural area were a city, their request might have seemed premature, as Calvary Auburn was a mere six miles away. But the highway linking the towns of Auburn and Cool is a sometimes treacherous winding road traversing the thousand foot deep American River canyon, and the folks on the Georgetown Divide were growing weary of wearing out tires, brakes, and automobile engines traveling to and from church. With a blessing and a hearty, “Go for it, bro!” from Pastor Greg Denham of the Auburn fellowship, Calvary Chapel Georgetown Divide celebrated its first Sunday morning service on January 13, 1991, with more than seventy-five people in attendance. Today, the church has grown to two Sunday morning services with various other Bible studies meeting throughout the week. Among the many ministries God has raised up at Calvary Chapel Georgetown Divide are missions efforts that reach around the world, an active and growing youth and coffee house ministry, men’s and women’s ministries, a weekly food give-away program for numerous Divide residents, teaching tours of Israel and the eastern Mediterranean, and many other Spirit-led efforts reflecting the Person, work and nature of the Lord Jesus Christ.
